Overview. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are a novel form of immunotherapy increasingly used in the treatment of various cancers. These agents are monoclonal antibodies that target specific glycoproteins (cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 [CTLA-4], programmed cell death protein 1 [PD-1]) on T cells or ligands (programmed death-ligand 1 [PD-L1]) on antigen producing cells.
